Fashion was buzzing like a bunch of bees all around Delhi and Mumbai last month. The Lakme Fashion Week 2015 was held in Mumbai from March 18 to 22. The Amazon India Fashion Week 2015 was in Delhi from March 25 to 28.
Lakme Fashion Week 2015
The esteemed Lakme Fashion Week in March saw models walking down the ramp in eye-catching lehengas with elaborate embroidery teamed with classy blouses, finely woven saris, pant salwars teamed with long kurtas, fitted dresses combined with net overskirts, strapless peplum tops, and overcoats. The guys scorched the ramp in suits featuring fine threadwork with roses on sleeves and shoulders.
One of the leading fashion designers of India, Manish Malhotra, celebrated the Silver Jubilee of his mesmerizing couture wear. He converted the runway into a flower festooned path. Rings of roses dangled above the ramp like ‘halos’ for fashion ‘angels’ to walk under.
His ‘Blue Runway’ collection at the fashion week was an attempt to speak about gender-based violence. He used ivory, indigo blue, and yellow as the chief colors in his collection. Yellow is big this season.
Masaba Gupta, for the first time in Indian fashion scene, displayed her collection on social media website Instagram instead of the ramp on the first day of the fashion week. Her colorful collection ‘Sugar Plum’ exhibited colors of the rainbow splashed over printed piped shirts, tiny crop tops, off-shoulder loose tents, shirt collar column dresses without sleeves and with popside prints, and huge skirts. Models showcased scarves tied interestingly on their heads.
The ‘Capsule’ collection showcased by Anand Bhushan injected new life to the runway. His all-white ensembles froze everybody on their tracks.
Gaurang Shah exhibited elegant Jamdani art on hand-woven saris with soft hues. His ‘Tree of Life’ collection also featured Chikankari, Kalamkari, and Phulkari designs.
An intriguing feature of the fashion week was the showstopper’s pink and gold sari…and the showstopper was none other than the versatile Vidya Balan!
Amazon India Fashion Week 2015
The Capital witnessed a chic and sensuous fashion week in March. Designer Poonam Bhagat showcased her label ‘Taika’ with an artistic impression of Pablo Picasso’s fancy for dots and lines. She transported the canvas drawings to the fabrics and presented a unique collection at the fashion week.
Full-sleeve shirts featuring wide peplums, cut-out jackets, long skirts, dresses featuring outwardly curved thighs, and boat-neck tops were the fashion staple at the week. The colors ranged from black, cobalt blue, and ivory to hues of orange and the setting sun.
Signature weaves adorned fabrics like georgette, crepe, velvet, voile, and more. Silhouettes were young with a dash of luxury and legacy. Lame fabrics returned to the ramp with hooded tops, one-shoulder draped dresses, and pre-stitched saris that shimmered in blue and plum shades.
The fashion week saw models strutting their stuff in feminine-androgynous ensembles. There were check jackets teamed with loose jeans and boots, dresses teamed with skirts featuring soft pleats, oversized parkas, over-wide trousers, and more. The Princess Pea dolls were an eye-catching accessory.
In short, both fashion weeks brought a fresh breeze of innovation in the style of dressing and accessorizing.
