India fashion scene
India is a nation where traditions rule the roost. Yet, the country has an emerging fashion industry. The 80’s saw only a handful of fashion designers. It was only in the 90’s and after that the industry saw a spurt in designing talent and a sweeping change in designs.
Today, the fashion industry of India is an established one. There are distinct fashion shows, weeks, and couture events that attract attention from all over the world.
Bollywood has been and still is a fashion trendsetter. It was in 1960’s that costume designers started experimenting with fashion in movies. Garments with images or prints of God on them were introduced in the fashion market in 1997, according to reports.
The famous Indian “kurti,” which was a shortened version of the traditional kurta came into existence in 1998 by a leading fashion designer. It became known globally as “Indian embroidered tunic.”
