This is the Most Important Part of Interior Design

Everybody wants to live in a beautiful home. The space you live in affects your life, so obsessing over the little details is important.

With the advent of the Internet, everybody can now become an interior designer. And the most important part of interior design is furniture.

Here are the different ways furniture affects the design of a room:

a) Furniture determines Function

For anybody who wants to become an interior designer- the most important part of a design is functionality, and the most important part of a function of any room comes from its furniture. It’s the furniture that provides information about a space’s purpose.

After all, whatever fancy interior design techniques we might use, you cannot eat in a room without a dining table. Similarly, a bedroom needs a bed; a living room needs adequate seating.

b) Furniture directs focus

Furniture can be used to as a visual anchor- drive the viewer’s eye wherever the designer wants it. There are different ways to do this, depending upon your objective. For instance, a furniture can be a ‘point of emphasis’ or visual anchor, or it could be used subtly into support or driving the eye towards the visual anchor. For instance, in the picture below, the sofa anchors the eye to the picture, which would otherwise have looked odd and disconnected on an empty wall.

Another way to do this is to use ‘rhythm’, i.e, creating visually pleasing patterns or contrasts. While the effect is most obvious in large spaces, it can be achieved inside a home too.

In the picture below, you see a ‘radiation’ rhythm- which gives a sweeping, circular kind of rhythm

c) Furniture balances a room

The concept of balance includes several things. One of them includes, of course, the flow of movement in the room. Nobody likes to feel cramped or have to squeeze his or her way past a hall.

Then, of course, there’s visual weight which needs to be balanced. Try shoving all the heaviest items of the room to one side and you’ll understand what this concept is.

What do you think? Do you think furniture is what makes or break the internal design, or does it play a less prominent role? Let us know in the comments below.
