A full-time job is any work that requires you to put in at least 40 hours a week. In return, you get a better salary, a token of stability and benefits like health insurance.
In India, the full-time job has for many, been the end-goal of life, and full-time job vacancies would disappear faster than hot cakes. However, things in India have been changing- a shift perceptible in Bollywood. Whereas Hollywood has been seeing the likes of ‘Office Space’ and ‘Fight Club’ since before the millennium, Bollywood has only recently started coming up with ‘Wake up Sid’ and ‘Rock on’, where full-time jobs have been described as dreary, life-sapping activities.
Why are ‘jobs’ criticized?
Let’s examine a typical full-time job. It involves reaching the office at 9:00 am and leaving at 5:00 pm, although many day shift jobs involve long hours and odd timings. Then, of course, there are night shift jobs.
So that’s 8 hours of work in a day. If you take out 8 hours for sleep, and 3 hours on chores, transportation, and other essentials, that still leaves 5 hours to do what you want, in addition to the weekend.
Is that really so bad?
The answer is, obviously, it depends. Upon a lot of things, but primarily on what kind of person you are, what kind of lifestyle you want, and what you enjoy doing (we covered this topic in our previous blog post.)
Take an average desk job office, done by a person who loves the outdoors. Imagine him in a cubicle, staring at a computer screen 8 hours a day, looking longingly out of the window on a rainy day.
In such a scenario, work can be tiring, and it’s monotony can be extremely draining for motivation. An individual just might wish to get home and zone out while watching television, instead of making efforts to follow his passion, have fun or improve his life. Soon this ennui starts spreading over to the weekends as well. When one thinks of his future and sees no significant change, it can be extremely depressing. This is where existential problems start come in.
Remember, we’re not even talking about night shift jobs here.
On the flip side
Sometimes people can revel in the easy-going nature of a job, even if work is monotonous. And then, some people can actually find their work interesting and challenging. Then there’s the social aspects. You make friends at work, and enjoy several moments of the working day. Finally, there is married life, it lends itself beautifully to a full-time job and a stable career.
There is an increasing tendency to romanticize ‘passion’ and criticize the so-called boring jobs that are held by most citizens. However, we must remember that while it’s great to follow your passion, but passion can be whimsical and misleading. The same job can be extremely boring for one person, and exciting for another.
So what does it really mean to work full-time? It means you’re selling your time for money. You will find your freedom curtailed, and there is always going to be some work that is repetitive. But really, if you’re at the right place, in the right job , everything should be fine.
So don’t let that full-time job vacancy go by without a second thought.
